Dugenta è un paese del basso Sannio, in provincia di Benevento, 2.773 anime (censimento 1996), 55 metri sul livello del mare. Lo si raggiunge percorrendo la statale 265, dista 20 km da Caserta e 42 da Benevento. La sua posizione geografica è situata in una diramazione della valle Telesina, meglio definita “Valle dell' Isclero” dal nome del fiume che separa il Comune di Dugenta dall’attiguo Comune di Sant’Agata de’ Goti. Dugenta è situata in riva al torrente San Giorgio affluente del Volturno.
Dugenta viene citata per prima volta in un documento dell'833, del principe Sicardo di Benevento, con le seguenti parole: " ab uno latere via antiqua que venit de Ducenta " e per via antica s'intendeva la via Latina, che da Roma conduceva a Benevento per Alife e Telese. Posta all'entrata della Valle Telesina, diventò ben presto un centro strategico di notevole importanza che portò alla fondazione di un castello che dominava il centro abitato.
Per la sua posizione fu al centro di aspri combattimenti con Tancredi da Lecce per difendere la dinastia normanna dall'unificazione degli Hohenstaufen, alla fine del XII secolo, e nel 1439 durante lo scontro tra renato d'Angiò e Alfonso d'Aragona per la successione degli Aragonesi al trono di Napoli. Nel 1734 Carlo III di Spagna passò per Dugenta con il suo esercito di spagnuoli prima di recarsi a Napoli.
Anche in tempi moderni il paese venne considerato di grande importanza strategica non tanto perché posto all'imbocco della valle Telesina, ma per la sua vicinanza al Volturno, per cui fu un importante presidio sia con l'avanzata di Garibaldi (in quanto l'unica vera resistenza Borbone si concretizzò proprio sulle rive del Volturno), sia con l'avanzata alleata.
Dugenta dopo l'Unità d'Italia diviene frazione di Melizzano, ha fatto parte della Contea di Caserta, ed è stata governata per molti anni dai Gambacorta. Nel 1956 Dugenta conquistò la propria autonomia da Melizzano.
Il territorio del paese fu interessato anche dalla transumanza tra le zone interne e quelle riverasche dell'Adriatico, dai pascoli estivi a quelli invernali, che avveniva attraverso una rete tratturale. Il tratto del fiume Volturno presso Dugenta era molto pescoso, dai registri della cancelleria angioina si viene a conoscenza della pratica della pesca dello storione. Molti anni fa era possibile attraversare il fiume ed andare a Squille.
Non lontano da Dugenta sorge il borgo di Sant’Agata dei Goti, per cui la STRADUGENTA può essere un occasione per visitare prima o dopo la gara questo magnifico scorcio d’Italia con i propri familiari.
La cittadella storica di Sant’Agata dei Goti si erge su una propaggine tufacea tra il Martorano e il Riello, due affluenti del fiume Isclero, che formano uno spettacolare incrocio di profondissimi valloni, in era geologica epicentro di un violentissimo sisma; l'intera città si sviluppa alle falde del monte Maineto (556 m), oltre il torrente Martorano. La pianta della Città antica è a semicerchio e misura 1 km in lunghezza, con diametro diretto da sud a nord.
Tutto il territorio di Sant’Agata dei Goti si distende alle falde del monte Taburno con un' escursione altimetrica di 1283 metri, con un minimo di 40 ed un massimo di 1323 metri: monte ricco di sorgenti ed infatti le fontane della Reggia di Caserta sono alimentate da acque estratte da questo territorio (sorgenti del Fizzo) e convogliate nell'acquedotto carolino, architettato da Luigi Vanvitelli, che attraversa per molta parte del suo percorso le colline prospicienti Sant'Agata.
All'interno del tessuto urbano vi sono diverse vestigia archeologiche inserite nelle facciate delle abitazioni come delle epigrafi e dei cippi romani. I principali monumenti sono:
La Cattedrale dell'Assunta (divenuta concattedrale a seguito della fusione della nascita della Diocesi di Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant'Agata de' Goti), fondata nel 970, rifatta nel XII secolo ed ancora nel XVIII secolo. Conserva pregevoli opere artistiche ed una cripta romanica dove gli archi poggiano su fini capitelli lavorati.
La Chiesa di Sant'Angelo in Munculanis, dove i recenti lavori di restauro hanno portato alla luce una struttura medievale ed una cripta con sepolture a colatoi.
Il Castello di epoca normanna ma pesantemente restaurato nel XVII secolo che possiede una sala con affreschi mitologici.
Non lontano da Dugenta sorge Limatola, ai piedi di una collina, sul cui cucuzzolo sorgeva il castello feudale, a guardia del corso del Volturno a poca distanza dall'antica scafa di Caiazzo, a valle della foce dell'Isclero nel Volturno. È circondata per buona parte dei suoi confini dalla provincia di Caserta. Dista dal suo capoluogo di provincia 48 km.
I principali punti di interesse sono:
Castello medioevale: costruito prima del 1.000 su di una fortezza sannita a guardia del Mediovolturno.
Borgo medioevale: sviluppatosi intorno al castello, con prevalenza al lato sud-est, con porta di ingresso (postierla) in via Schiavi; presenza di quattro archi catalani risalenti alla seconda metà del XVI secolo e di trasendae, vie che permettevano l'ingresso dei carri e strictule, vie percorribili solo a piedi.
Chiesa vecchia di S. Biagio e S. Sossio, fatta costruire, al di fuori della cinta muraria del castello dai Duchi Gambacorta nel VI secolo, in sostituzione dell'antica chiesa di S. Biagio riportata dalla Bolla di Sennete del 1113, di cui Bartolomeo Varrone afferma di aver visto i ruderi, in posizione leggermente laterale rispetto all'attuale chiesa, ristrutturata dagli stessi duchi Gambacorta nel 1724.
Chiesa di S. Eligio a Biancano fatta costruire da alcuni cavalieri francesi nel 1388, sfuggiti alla fame e alla peste che infuriò nel tremendo inverno del 1383 tra le truppe francesi acquartierate tra Caserta e Maddaloni, ivi giunti al seguito di Luigi d'Angiò, nell'ambito della guerra di successione al Regno di Napoli.
Chiesa A.G.P. (Ave Gratia Plena) la cui costruzione risale al 1403 con portale del 1503 e campanile in stile vanvitelliano, costruito nel 1724. Il 14 ottobre del 1714 viene eletto economo della laicale chiesa dell'A.G.P. il magnifico Giuseppe d'Ettorre mentre nel 1784 è eletto economo il magnifico dott. medico Don Pasquale Canelli.
Nuova Chiesa di S.Biagio : costruita su progetto dell'architetto napoletano Marcello Canino, inaugurata dal vescovo di S. Agata dei Goti nel 1965, con annessa casa canonica e campana giubilare del peso di 80 quintali, seconda o terza d'Italia, dopo la campana dei caduti di Rovereto di ben 225 quintali
